Now Entering Parenthood...

Friday was the first doctor’s visit… well the first visit to the nurse practioner.  My first visit to my OBGYN will be after Memorial Day.  So far, Oakwood is not scoring any major points:

1. The nurse made me walk through the same survey I filled out before I came into the office, question by question (5 pages).  Can Obama get some electronic records up in our healthcare system please?
2. Everything the nurse told me I already knew… 1800 calories a day, try and gain around 20-30 pounds overall… you can exercise, but try and keep your heart rate below 140 beats per minute.
3. The nurse told me some misguided advice, such as “pregnant women should avoid all abdominal exercise” (not true) and that “one should avoid all soft cheese, pasturized or unpasturized” (not true)

But I can’t fault a nurse… I probably can’t even fault a doctor.  Every pregnant woman has to do her own research and find out what she thinks is right for her.  The one thing I do want is an OBGYN who believes above all else that I should trust myself.  One that thinks circumcision is not a health issue, but a choice to be made by the parents.  One that thinks I am capable to make the right decision when it comes to alcohol and other no-nos during pregnancy.

I hope that the doctor (who I will meet shortly) at Oakwood is this… but if she isn’t, I’m prepared to go find someone who is.
