If there’s one form of media that I neglect, it’s books. I’m not proud of this, but at least I can admit it. It’s not that I don’t enjoy reading, it’s just that I feel like there’s never enough time in my life to bury myself in a book, and the few times when there is, I feel like doing something else. That being said, I knew I was going to have to read at least one book to get myself ready in some way for the upcoming event of being a dad. So far I actually have made it through two of them! The first book, So You’re Going to be a Dad by Peter Downey, attempted to ease my apprehension about fatherhood in a comical way.

While it certainly was an easy read, I didn’t find it particularly useful, and honestly I found the author’s sense of humor to be pretty lame, and even annoying at times. There was one part of the book where he actually used up 3 pages listing silly names you shouldn’t give to your child including ones like Bertha and Agnes.

The second book I read was a birthday gift from my Grandmother entitled The Expectant Father. This was certainly the better of the two books, with lots of great information about what men experience during a pregnancy, tips on how to handle labor and delivery, and ways to bond with your baby.

Since these were both given to me, I haven’t actually set foot inside a bookstore to browse for daddy-to-be books. While I’m certain there are a ton of books aimed at women and parenting in general, both authors claim that there are very few books targeting expectant fathers. Whatever the case, I’d definitely recommend The Expectant Father to anyone looking to get educated about fatherhood.
